PSP 2005 has launched a new community football programme offering free weekly sessions for young people aged 8–16 who might otherwise not have access to structured football. The initiative, which began on the 1st of April, runs in partnership with the local council, Northfields Community Trust, and three local primary schools.
Why This Programme Matters
Research consistently shows that access to organised sport has a profoundly positive impact on young people's mental health, academic performance, and social development. Yet participation rates in grassroots sport remain significantly lower in areas of economic deprivation. PSP 2005's free sessions aim to directly address this gap in our local area.
Session Details
- Every Tuesday and Thursday, 4:30pm–6pm
- Venue: Northfields Community Sports Hall and outdoor pitch
- Ages: 8–16 (mixed ability, no experience required)
- Cost: Completely free — kit and boots available to borrow on request
- Led by FA-qualified coaches with enhanced DBS clearance
In its first two weeks, over 40 young people attended the sessions — many of whom had never taken part in organised football before. The club plans to identify the most talented participants for integration into the academy pathway, though participation is valued for its own sake regardless of footballing ability.
How to Refer a Young Person
Teachers, youth workers, parents, and carers can refer young people to the programme by contacting our Community Outreach Lead David Barnes at [email protected]. Self-referral is also welcomed — young people can simply turn up on the day.
Football changed my life as a young person. This programme is our way of making sure that experience is available to every child in our area, regardless of background. — David Barnes, Community Outreach Lead, PSP 2005
