How We Develop Young Footballers: The PSP 2005 Academy Pathway

Our structured three-phase development model ensures every player progresses at the right pace.

At PSP 2005, we believe that long-term player development is more valuable than short-term results. Our academy programme is built around a three-phase development model that mirrors the principles recommended by The FA, adapted with our own coaching philosophy to produce well-rounded, technically confident players.

Phase 1: Foundation Phase (U7–U11)

The Foundation Phase is where the football journey begins. At this stage, our priority is enjoyment, confidence, and establishing the basic technical habits — receiving, passing, dribbling, and shooting — that will underpin a player's future development. Sessions at this level use small-sided formats (5v5 and 7v7) to maximise touches on the ball and encourage creativity.

  • Ratio of coach to players: 1:6
  • Format: 5v5 (U7–U8), 7v7 (U9–U10), 9v9 (U11)
  • Key outcomes: technical confidence, love of the game, social development

Phase 2: Youth Development Phase (U12–U15)

From U12, the focus shifts towards tactical understanding alongside continued technical refinement. Players begin to understand their roles within team structures, learn to press and defend as a unit, and develop physical literacy — speed, agility, and endurance — in a football context. We compete in the County Youth League from this phase.

Phase 3: Competitive Phase (U16–U18)

Our oldest age groups operate in a near-professional training environment. Sessions run five times per week for selected squad members and include video analysis, strength and conditioning, and exposure to adult football through our senior squad fixtures. Several of our U18 graduates have gone on to sign with semi-professional clubs.

We don't just coach football — we develop people. The habits and discipline players learn here stay with them long after their playing days. — Head Coach Roberts, PSP 2005
